The University of Mississippi was established in the town of Oxford in 1848 so that the citizenry would have an alternative to sending Mississippi's young male gentry to the North or to England for collegiate education. On May 7, 1847 the New York State Legislature chartered "a Free Academy for the purpose of extending the benefits of education gratuitously to parsons who have been pupils in the common schools of the ... city mississippi state university extension service and county of New York".
